In the bustling, eclectic enclave hidden in the eastern part of Singapore, the seeds of Rucksack Inn were sown in 2007. Imagine a modest, cozy hostel with just 18 beds, a tiny haven for travelers in search of a budget-friendly, clean, and safe place to rest their heads. It was here, in this intimate setting, that our bold vision took root—a vision fueled by our mad passion and an unyielding belief in the power of affordable travel.

We, the founders of Rucksack Inn, were a diverse community of like-minded travelers from all walks of life. We included business and leisure travelers, families and solo adventurers, professionals and entrepreneurs. Despite our varied backgrounds, we shared a common dream: to make traveling in Southeast Asia accessible to all, without compromising on comfort or safety. We believed that everyone deserved a welcoming place to stay, regardless of their budget.

Rucksack Inn was more than just a place to sleep; it was a home away from home for backpackers from around the globe. We poured our hearts into every detail, ensuring that our guests felt like part of a family. We created a space where strangers became friends, sharing stories and experiences that transcended borders. This ethos of community and belonging became the cornerstone of Rucksack Inn’s identity.

The success of this 18-bed cozy hostel led to a growing demand and an ambitious expansion plan. In 2009, despite the challenges posed by the Asian Financial Crisis, we opened a new location on Hong Kong Street, a local goods trading hub on the outskirts of Singapore’s central financial district. This strategic move provided us with invaluable experience in weathering a sub-optimal economic environment, teaching us the virtues of resilience, courage, and innovation—principles we uphold to this day.

The new Rucksack Inn on Hong Kong Street brought a fresh energy to the area, sparking a wave of gentrification. What was once a traditional trading hub evolved into a vibrant space that retained a unique mix of old and new. The charm and atmosphere of a place steeped in history blended seamlessly with modern touches, creating a locale full of character. Today, Hong Kong Street is home to unique cafes, speakeasies, and a variety of hospitality offerings, all nestled alongside original trading companies that still operate there. It has truly become a hip and happening destination.

As Rucksack Inn expanded, we never lost sight of our core mission. We saw the potential to bring affordable, friendly, safe, and clean accommodations to travelers throughout Southeast Asia. With every new hostel we opened, from the bustling streets to the surfing beaches of what the region has to offer, we remained steadfast in our commitment to affordability and quality. We believed that everyone deserved the opportunity to explore the world without breaking the bank, and we worked tirelessly to ensure that Rucksack Inn offered just that.

We understood that by scaling our operations, we could not only provide more options for budget-conscious travelers but also create a sustainable business model that would support a greater purpose.
